Birdwatchers in northern Spain are buzzing. A Siberian rubythroat (known in Spanish as ruiseñor calíope), a songbird from Asia, has been photographed in Cantabria. Nobody had documented one in Spain before.

What happened?

The bird was photographed on Wednesday in Suances, a coastal town in Cantabria. The photographer was Abel Ojugas Díaz, president of the Asociación Proyecto Ría San Martín, a local group linked to the estuary.

It is a male in its first winter. You can spot the species by its striking red throat.

The Siberian rubythroat (Calliope calliope) breeds in parts of Asia and migrates to warmer regions for the winter. Seeing one in western Europe is unusual, so this sighting counts as exceptional.

Why is it such a big deal?

Birdwatchers talk about a "first record" (primera cita in Spanish). That means the first documented appearance of a species in a given territory. Here, the territory is all of Spain.

According to reports, the bird was found in an area of Cantabria with no environmental protection. That has drawn attention to how important the estuary is for migratory birds.

Not the first surprise from this estuary

The Ría San Martín has done this before. In July 2025, Ojugas identified a white-rumped sandpiper there, a wader from North America. That was also a first documented record for Spain.

The estuary has also been in the news for a sadder reason. Earlier reports described a mass die-off of birds there, and concern over whether it could affect the area's wildlife.

What's next?

The sighting is now on record, and it adds a new species to Spain's bird list. Whether the rubythroat stays around Suances is not known.

If you're a birder, the news is a reminder that a small estuary can host surprises from thousands of kilometres away.
